The 1970s saw great change in Detroit and in auto racing, with Pro Stock being a huge draw for fans. Chrysler racing historian and author Geoff Stunkard presents a chronological recollection, drawing from many interviews and summaries of the actual technical efforts that the factory accomplished and includes both rare/unpublished technical and personal images from the team members and some of the most dramatic images taken by the sport’s best photographers.
Origins
Development in the 1967–1968 era resulted in what many still consider the ultimate Chrysler race package: the Hurst Hemi package cars. 1970
Here is the Missile at Martin, going forward on Sunday before falling to Mike Fons in the final round. This was a big deal, as it was one of the nearest races to all of the Detroit manufacturers. (Photo Courtesy quartermilestones .com, Pit Slides Archive)
1971
Funny Car pilot Roger Lindamood (center) came in to drive the car during the Winternationals, but engine trouble sidelined that effort. It is likely that talks with Don Carlton happened during this time. Ted (left) and D. Landy look on. (Photo Tom Hoover, Courtesy Dave Rockwell)
1972
Photographer Steve Reyes was in Tulsa over Labor Day in 1972 as Donnie attentively launched the Missile ’Cuda during ferocious qualifying. Wheels-up, the car had become one of the most visible in the nation thanks to great publicity and victories on the NHRA and IHRA circuits that season. (Photo Courtesy Steve Reyes)
1973
By using pieces of yarn, the team would shoot still photos and video to determine the airflow over the body. This was in addition to anything Ron Killen was recording electronically on the pass at the same time. (Photo Courtesy Joe Pappas)
1974
Between Dave Koffel chasing hard-to-find parts and the engine-building skill of Ted and Lenny, the team had a number of Chrysler LA-series engines to experiment with that year. Note the very tight distributor position in relation to the intake plenum. (Photo Courtesy Oldfield Family)
1975-1980
The lengthened Colt in action at Pomona during the Winternationals was captured on film by Steve Reyes. This racing effort did not have much success due to a lack of possible traction, and the car was eventually converted back into a standard-wheelbase design but kept in B/A for the remainder of Don’s 1977 racing effort.
