State of Justice (excerpt)
It was a coverup, from start to finish. Though they didn’t know it at the time, it was one that began months ago, then faded away as if it never existed, almost as if they weren’t players in something larger than themselves.
But they were, and now, after everything she’d been through, after everything they’d all been through together, it was back…and it had teeth. And no matter the reasons surrounding it all, or the stories they reassured themselves with when they looked in the mirror, the path they were on was at once dark and treacherous.
And it seemed to have a singular outcome, one that none of them saw coming.
* * *
At a time when things should have been getting better, they simply weren’t. People were back out on the street, trying to remember what life had been like only a few short months ago. But the frustrations were everywhere, this not long after a time when a Minnesota cop put his knee on another man’s neck and held it there until the whole world seemed ready to upend itself.
And one woman knew better than most what it was like not be able to breathe, even though no one had ever put a knee to her neck. She knew because a hardship of her own held her down and threatened to drag her under to a place she thought she might never escape.
Most days she could tuck it away and bury it deep within the lizard part of her brain, where it would sail off into the distant waters of her mind, floating along like a ghost ship at sea. But then the winds would change, and the vessel would circle back, the calm waters she sought once again far away, lost beyond the razor-thin horizon of rational thought and outright despair.
When she finally decided enough was enough, she took action in a way that left almost everyone lost and frantic, all because of a single, instinctual act of survival on her part. It was the only thing she could think of to save herself…and more importantly, maybe save them all.
Becky Taylor, fighting her demons the only way she knew how.
Head on, with brute force…
